`Tis the season: food bank in high gear

Valdez readies for season of giving during holidays

The Valdez Food Bank will hold its Thanksgiving holiday basket giveaway this Saturday, November 19, from 2-6 p.m.

“It’s going to be at the college training room,” said Dorenda Kramp, the food bank’s coordinator of most everything.

The food bank will be open during its regular hours this week, but will not distribute food next week.

“We are closed the week of Thanksgiving,” Kramp said, but noted clients will receive extras this week when it opens during its regular distribution, plus extras in Saturday’s holiday distribution.

Kramp also noted extra volunteers are needed the sort items Friday before Saturday’s basket give-away and the day of.

“Thanksgiving sort of depletes” supplies, Kramp said, noting the recent Boy Scout food drive was a great success, but Christmas is just around the corner. “We will be pretty depleted going into Christmas.”

She’s right. And Christmas Eve is exactly one month after Thanksgiving, which falls on November 24, this year.

“Lovely place to put your year-end tax deductions,” Kramp reminds those who have more than they actually need. “We know what to do with it.”

The food bank joined a statewide food buying cooperative as part of a revamping effort and as a result has been able to drastically lower costs on many staples when it needs to purchase foods for its shelves.

But it still also relies on donated foods.

“We have people who remember us all the time,” she said, “We have people who give on impulse.”

But the charity and its volunteers rely on these donations, no matter how they come.

“We need all of them and all of them are appreciated,” Kramp said.

And here’s to happy holidays for all, both givers and receivers.
