High 5 triathlon hits high note
CVTs race enters its 15th year
Sergei Wegner is a veteran when it comes to the Copper Valley High Five Triathlon. The 16 year-old has been racing in the event since he was only 6 years-old. That experience paid off last weekend when he won the teen solo category in the event.
“I enjoy the competition,” Wegner said after picking up the win. He said he also enjoyed the crowd being there to watch the race. The Valdez High School sophomore said he uses the race to prepare for other events down the road.
“I’m running cross country right now and the race is great for cardio,” Wegner said.
Over 80 athletes participated in this year’s event, which is part of the Valdez Gold Rush Days festivities. The event features swimming, running and bicycling competitions and participants ranged from 10 year-olds to adults. Some competed individually like Wegner. Some racers competed in teams. Most of the competition was held in the junior high-high school area.
