Holiday hours vary for essentials in Valdez

Most government offices open Christmas and New Years Eve

Christmas and New Years Eve both fall on Mondays this holiday season, and essential services such as banks and government offices will be open, some all day long.

The Valdez post office will be open for counter service until noon on Dec. 24, according to Jeff Avery, post master.

However, Avery says he will keep the lobby’s Dutch door open after hours so people can pick up late packages. Avery said he did the same last year, and was there until about 6 p.m.

“My chance to play Santa Claus there, a little bit,” he joked.

Post Master Jeff Avery is encouraging everyone in Valdez to check their post office boxes frequently this week as the Christmas rush of packages flood its sorting area. The post office counter will be open until noon on Christmas Eve, with package pickup continuing through the afternoon.

The post office will be open until noon, Dec. 31, then closed until Wed. Jan. 2.

Both banks will also be open Christmas Eve. Wells Fargo will be open until 3 p.m. Christmas Eve, while First National Bank of Anchorage will close at 1 p.m. Both will open New Years Eve and will be closed Jan. 1.

City Hall will also be open until noon Christmas Eve, and closed Dec. 25. It will be open December 31, but closed New Years Day.

The Dept. of Labor and Dept. of Motor Vehicles in Valdez will both be open Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, but closed Christmas and New Years Day.

The Valdez Star will be closed Dec. 20-26. The next publication will be Jan. 2. Deadlines for all submissions will be noon, Friday, Dec. 28.
