Eric Auten, a lawyer with experience in civil litigation and criminal law, has opened a practice in Valdez.

Auten is fulfilling a long-time goal of moving to Valdez.

He said he had an internship in Juneau in the 1990s and spent a little time exploring other parts of the state. One May day, he drove over Thompson Pass. “I almost dropped out of law school right then and there,” he joked, citing the scenery, snow and ambience of Valdez as his reasons for settling in this small town. “Anything to do with snow I love.”

Auten said the time was right in his career to step out on his own after cutting his teeth with a civil law firm in Anchorage and stints with the law department of the Kenai Peninsula Borough in Soldotna and two years in Bethel with the District Attorney’s office.

He came to Valdez late last summer to begin the process of settling in and opening the new law office, which offers general legal services.

“Anything in a small town that walks in the door,” he said with a smile.

Auten attended Colorado College and is a 1997 graduate of the BYU Law School. His office is located at 224 Kobuk St. Ste. 3. You can reach the office at 461-0342.
