Bill Walker, former Valdez mayor and current city attorney, can add TV show host to his long list of credits and accomplishments after Sunday night’s debut of On Point with Bill Walker. The new show was taped Thursday afternoon and broadcast 10 p.m. Sunday night on ABC affiliates across Alaska.

The public affairs show will focus on Alaskan issues, often told through the point of view of typical Alaskans, rather than paid experts, Walker said.

In fact, Walker is hosting the simple interview show without pay.

“This is not a million dollar box deal,” Walker said.

His first guest was Glennallen businessman Park Kriner, who described for viewers the difficulties he and his wife are facing with Glennallen energy bills climbing as high as $20,000 per month for the couple’s various businesses.

Kriner said the couple may be forced to shut down its businesses at retirement because there are no buyers willing to purchase businesses that run at a loss for much of the year due to high energy costs.

While Alaska energy is a Bill Walker specialty - he is also legal council for the Alaska Gasline Port Authority - he said the show will also cover other topic important to ordinary Alaskans, such as education and tourism.

“It’s not a single issue” show Walker said. “It will be a little broader than that.”

Walker also said he hopes to be able to take the show on the road, to highlight specific issues outside the state’s population centers.

Walker said he was surprised when approached by ABC and its concept for the show.

“We are pleased to have Bill on board with our staff,” Scott Centers, COO of Coastal Television and General Manager of KYUR, KATN and KJUD said in a written statement . “Bill knows energy laws, regulations, Asian markets and will educate our viewers on important topics at hand. Alaskans already hear about energy initiatives and proposals from information fed to them from the media and our legislators. Bill Walker will help drill down and walk our viewers through these topics and provide an in depth and factual account of each topic at hand and how that topic will affect our state’s future.”
