There are no city council incumbents on the ballot for this May's municipal elections.
Voters will have nine candidates to choose from for three seats opening on the city council according to city clerk Sheri Pierce.
Candidates are: Alvin Murray, Douglas Davies, Ryan McCune, Robert Mueller, H. Lea Cockerham, Dawson Moore, Greg Davis, Roger Kipar, and Lon Needles.
A software glitch in a computer used by the Valdez Star caused candidate Alvin Murray's name to not appear on the sample ballot used to reference council candidates by the Valdez Star.
The City Clerk's office has confirmed Murray's candidacy for city council and that his name does indeed appear on the municipal election ballot.
Conversely, only incumbents have filed to run for the board of education. Sitting board members Dolores Gard and Dr. Kathy Todd are both running unopposed for three-year terms.
The elections will be held Tuesday, May 5 and there are no propositions on this year's ballot. The date for a forum for voters to meet candidates will be announced later this week.

Springtime elections are a first for Valdez. The Valdez City Council changed the dates for municipal elections from the first Tuesday in October to the first Tuesday in May to help newly elected school board and city council members get better acquainted with government functions before facing the challenges of multi-million dollar budgets.
Voters will need to be registered by April 5 to vote in the elections.
In person absentee voting at city hall begins April 20 according to Pierce. Voting by mail and fax require contacting the clerk's office Pierce said.
"The application for absentee ballot by mail in city elections must be received in the office of the City Clerk not more than six months nor less than ten days prior to the election for which the absentee ballot is sought," the city's website says. "Absentee ballots will be mailed out approximately three weeks prior to the election."
