Meet the Candidates date announced before election
Forum will give voters and chance to meet and question council hopefuls
Mark your calendars to meet Valdez candidates for city council.
Voters will have a chance to meet and question the nine candidates for council on Thursday, April 16 at the Valdez City Council Chambers. The forum begins at 6 p.m.
Nine candidates will be on the ballot for the May 4 elections that will fill three seats.
Candidates are: Alvin Murray, Douglas Davies, Ryan McCune, Robert Mueller, H. Lea Cockerham, Dawson Moore, Greg Davis, Roger Kipar, and Lon Needles.
City council seats are for two year terms.
No incumbents have filed to run for reelection. Incumbents Dolores Gard and Dr. Kathy Todd are both running unopposed for three-year terms on the board of education.
The event is hosted by the Valdez Star and Marcia Lynn.
No ballot measures are before voters in this municipal election.
While the campaign season opens, important deadlines are looming for voters.
To cast a ballot in the municipal elections, a voter must be registered to vote with a valid home address in Valdez by April 5. A voter who lives in Valdez but is registered to vote elsewhere in Alaska must change their registration before that deadline.
Registration forms are available online, at most state offices and from the city clerk’s office at city hall. Registrants can also obtain the form by mail, fax or as an email according to the state’s Division of Elections.
Absentee voting in person will begin April 20 at city hall according to the clerk’s office.
The clerk’s office can also facilitate voting for disabled and homebound voters who can vote by proxy with a personal representative or in person on election day by a visit from the clerk’s office.
Anyone with questions is advised to visit the city’s website, visit city hall or call the clerk’s office at 834-3468.
Voters looking for more information on the Meet the Candidate’s forum can call the Valdez Star at 835-2405.
