Walkers rocked to the 80s last Friday and Saturday during the 11th annual Relay For Life.
The 21-hour event raises funds for the American Cancer Society through various fundraising efforts that culminate in an overnight walk for pledges.
Through rain and damp Valdez weather, participants walked the track created near the Kelsey Dock.
"The event is a celebration for those who have fought cancer, a remembrance of those that have lost their battles to cancer, and a chance to fight back for those who have or will face a battle with cancer," lead organizer Shawnda Gallup said in a press release Monday. "Though the weather wasn't on our side, Valdez rallied and spent 21 hours outside walking through the night to show its support."
The group has raised $43,561 to date according to Gallup and they are hopeful that its goal of $50,000 will be raised when the books are closed for the Valdez event on August 31.
"Valdez's support began in 2004," Gallup said, "and has since raised over $385,000 in the fight against cancer."

She also noted that support services such as flights to Anchorage, fuel reimbursement for travel by car, free or reduced rate hotel rooms, financial support, wigs, and counseling services have been used by many Valdez cancer patients over the years.
"In 2014, fifteen Valdez residents and six Cordova residents utilized the support services offered through the American Cancer Society," Gallup said. "Our all-volunteer based committee thanks the community for its continued support of this amazing cause and hopes that you will join us next year for the annual Relay event, or even sooner at our second annual Colors of Cancer Fun Run on July 25."
