Wet weather did not stop the good folks at Copper Valley Telecom from serving up a nice barbecue for everyone Friday during its annual Customer Appreciation Picnic in Valdez.
Check your prescription medications and get your business with government offices done early this week: many in Valdez will be taking July 3 off as a holiday.
It is common for civil servants to receive the day off before or after a holiday when it falls on a weekend; that is the case this Saturday, July 4th.
The Village Pharmacy in Valdez will be closed this coming Friday and Saturday, as will most government offices, including city hall, the court system, DMV, and the customer service offices of both Copper Valley Telecom and Copper Valley Electric Association.
Both banks will be open for normal Friday business hours, as will the post office.
"Normal on Friday, yes," said Post Master Jeff Avery.

This map shows the entrance – and exit – closure sight at the small boat harbor that the US Coast Guard is closing during July 4th fireworks this Saturday.
"The Coast Guard will establish a temporary 200-yard safety zone around the Valdez Spit on Saturday July 4, 2015," a press release from Lt. Ben Bauman of the Marine Safety Unit said. "To ensure the safety of the public viewing this year's City of Valdez 4th of July fireworks display, as well as the safety of mariners transiting the Port during the display, the Coast Guard has established a temporary safety zone encompassing the navigable waters within a 200-yard radius of the terminus of the Valdez Spit."
The safety zone will be in effect from 10-11 p.m. on Saturday July 4.
"The entrance of the Valdez Small Boat Harbor will be closed to both inbound and outbound traffic during this time," the Coast Guard said.
"Boaters who violate this safety zone are subject to direction to leave the restricted area and vessel boarding, as well as civil or criminal penalties."
The Temporary Final Rule on the safety zone will be available at USCG Marine Safety Unit.
