The Alaska Permanent Fund dividend will pay out $2,072 to all qualified Alaskans this October.
The amount was announced by Shania Sommer, a middle school student from Palmer.
Sommer was given the honor by Gov. Bill Walker, who said the Alaska’s permanent fund is really about the next generation.
The press conference was held at the Atwood Center in Anchorage today.
Walker and Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott both spoke briefly about the need to balance the state’s budget, which has plunged into red ink while the dividends paid to Alaskans exceeded state oil revenues for the first time ever.
