The board of education is looking for a community member to join its ranks.

The move comes after Bill Comer resigned his elected seat a week ago Monday, leaving a vacancy on the seven-member board.

Anyone who would like to like to serve on the board can apply by sending a letter of interest to the school district's central office either in person, by mail or email according to an advertisement on page 11 in this week's edition of the Valdez Star.

Additional information on the application process is included in the advertisement.

For potential candidates, time is of the essence: the deadline to submit a letter of interest is this Friday, Oct. 24.

The candidate will serve until the next municipal election, which will be May 3, 2016.

Regular school board terms are three years. Whoever wins the school board appointment will be able to run in the next election to complete the term, which expires in May of 2017.

The board of education will likely make the appointment at its first meeting in November.

The board's next regularly scheduled meeting in October has been canceled. The board will meet again on November 9.

Comer, who is the chief of the Valdez Police Dept., resigned from his position after breaking the news that he had accepted the position of Deputy Commissioner for the Alaska Dept. of Public Safety - an appointment made by Gov. Bill Walker. The position is based in Juneau.
