The Buccaneer swim team will host the Region III tournament at Valdez High School this weekend, the first of four this year.

While the swim team is expected to splash its way to the top at the pool this weekend, the ski team will be hoping for snow.

While the ski season for the high school begins this week, the team will also host the 3A regional competition this year, Feb. 19-20.

Not to be outdone, the Buccaneer volleyball team will be hosting regionals this November 6-7.

For the wrestling team, regionals will be a rare second home tournament.

In a typical school year, Buccaneer wrestlers host the Throw Down in Snow Town and spend the rest of the season attending tournaments out of town.

"This weekend was our only home meet in wrestling besides regionals coming up in December," said Lea Cockerham, activities director at Valdez High School.

He said the high number of regional tournaments in Valdez this year is a fluke - one not likely to be repeated anytime soon.

"It could be another twenty years before we seen another year like this," he said.
