PUBLIC NOTICE

VALDEZ MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL ARCHIVE ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS – THREE (3) VACANCIES

Three vacancies on the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive Association (VMHA) Board of Directors currently exist due to term expiration. Board members are appointed by the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive Association Corporation (Valdez City Council). The term of office will be February 2016 through January 2019. Individuals interested in serving on the museum board are encouraged to apply.

Applications are available at City Hall located at 212 Chenega Avenue or on the city website: http://www.ci.valdez.ak.us. Applications can be submitted to the City Clerk’s office by email to ahendrickson@ci.valdez.ak.us or dropped off at city hall. Deadline for submission is January 27, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. for appointment by City Council on February 2, 2016.

The VMHA Board is the Valdez Museum’s governing body and oversees the management and operation of the museum under contract with the City of Valdez. Appointments will be made on the basis of the candidate’s willingness to serve in an unpaid capacity, as well as a candidate’s experience and/or education that may support and enhance achievement of museum corporation goals to preserve community history and support community education programs.

Senior Citizen and Disabled Veteran 2016 Tax Exemption applications are now available at City Hall.

SENIOR CITIZENS

To qualify for the property tax exemption, each senior citizen must have attained the age of 65 on or before December 31, 2015, and must have owned and occupied real property as a permanent place of abode as of December 31, 2015. New applicants must provide proof of age.

A resident widow or widower age 60 to 64 is eligible if the deceased spouse of the widow or widower was eligible at the time of his or her death.

DISABLED VETERANS

Real property owned and occupied as a permanent place of abode by a disabled veteran qualifies for property tax exemption. "Disabled Veteran" means a disabled person separated from the military service of the United States under a condition that is not dishonorable who is a resident of the State, whose disability was incurred or aggravated in the line of duty in the military service of the United States, and whose disability has been rated 50% or more by the branch of service in which that person served or by the Veteran's Administration. Applicants must annually provide proof of 50% or more disability.

Qualified applicants may obtain an application from City Hall or on the City’s website. Applications must be filed with the City Clerk’s office no later than

January 15, 2016.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Fire Protection System 2016 Tax Exemption applications are now available at City Hall.

To qualify for the fire protection system tax exemption, each structure for which you are applying must contain a fire protection system approved under AS18.70.081 in operating condition, and incorporated as a fixture or part of the structure. The exemption granted by this subsection is limited to an amount equal to two percent of the value of the structure based on the assessment for 1981, if the fire protection system is a fixture of the structure on January 1, 1981; or an amount equal to two percent of the value of the structure based on the assessment of January 1, of the year immediately following the installation of the fire protection system if the fire protection system becomes a fixture of the structure after January 1, 1981.

Qualified applicants may obtain an application from City Hall or on the City’s website.

Please note, property owners must call the Valdez Fire Department at 834-3467 to schedule an inspection of the fire protection system. Inspections must be complete and approved prior to submitting your application.

Applications must be filed no later than January 15, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.
