Fat bike enthusiasts are holding a Bash this weekend in Valdez.

The town's first fat bike competition is set to be held this week, and organizers say it will be a blast.

"Chugach Fat Bike Bash featuring a little something for everyone from fun-loving fatties to cross-country specialists, a family and spectator-friendly fat bike rodeo and the debut of the Fat Freeride World Championships," the group, Levitation 49, said on its website. "This is not your standard issue long-distance sufferfest. We just want to have fun."

The track is groomed and ready. The event is actually a series of events, including a summit, which the group says will be led by Mountain Bike Hall of Famer, Gary Sjoquist. The group says he is arguably among the leading voices of fat bike advocacy.

"The new venue for the Summit is The Fat Mermaid restaurant on the harbor in downtown Valdez," the group said. "There will be no fee to attend the event but participants are still asked to register for a free ticket online."

A number of roads will be closed periodically for the event according to the city of Valdez.

The following times and places for the closures are taken from a press release from the public information office:

Road Closure: North Harbor Drive will be closed to traffic from 9:00-10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 18th.
