The Angel Tree, which matches secret Santas with needy children, is up and ready at the post office in Valdez.

It may be the age of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and many families will spend time more time together on Facebook than real face time, but many great Valdez Christmas traditions are thriving in 2016.

In Valdez, it could be argued that the Emblem Club Christmas Bazaar is the biggest shopping day of the year - and it appears that this year will be no exception.

The big event will be at both the Eagles and Elks Lodges this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Not to be outdone, the Valdez Senior Center is holding its annual bazaar the same date and time.

Load up on gifts and goodies - because Valdez is also in for a rare treat this year - in the form of a Shakespearean comedy .

"As You Like It" is coming to the stage, directed by Dawson Moore and presented by the Prince William Sound College drama department.

This is just the beginning of the Christmas entertainment season.

The venerated Ladies Christmas Tea is Wednesday - and all women are encouraged to attend this social event that celebrates the birth of Christ. Details are available on page 12 of this edition of the Valdez Star.

This is followed by everyone's family favorite, the Community Christmas Program. In its 44th year, the Christmas program highlights talented Valdez performers, and ends with a moving performances of the Hallelujah chorus. And it's not too late to perform in the program or the chorus. Information on joining in the fun is on page 2.

Perhaps one of the more important Christmas events is the raising of the Angel Tree at the post office.

The Angel Tree is supported by Santa's Workshop, and Sheila Jordan - with the help of her employer, Copper Valley Telecom. It connects needy children with Christmas present donors.

The Angel Tree is loaded with ornaments that bear the age and Christmas wishes of a youngster in need this holiday season.

It is easy to participate in the program. Simply choose an ornament on the tree, which lists the age, gender, interests and needs of a local child. The donor buys and wraps gifts, and brings them back to place under the tree.

So get ready for the season Valdez - we all have much to celebrate this year.
