The Valdez Star - Serving Prince William Sound and Copper River Basin

Ice climbing conditions dangerous

Festival changes schedule

Levitation 49 regrets to announce ice climbing activities this weekend Feb. 17 - 20 have been cancelled.

At this time, thin ice with intermittent open water makes it inadvisable to attempt to cross the Lowe River to reach climbs at Bridal Veil and Green Steps.

Additionally, Levitation 49 reports there are man-altered features in Keystone Canyon that may pose a heightened risk to climb. The warning applies to three affected features known as Green Steps, Horsetail, and Bridal Veil Falls.

The following ice fest events will still be held for the community and intrepid guests.

Friday, Feb. 17 Mountainfilm & Silent auction at the Valdez Civic Center, 110 Clifton. Doors open at 6:30; films begin at 7:30. All ages welcome. $10; Bear's Tooth beer on tap.

Saturday Feb. 18. Free gear clinic with Black Diamond Equipment, followed by slide show with noted adventure photographer Ace Kvale. 7 - 9 p.m. at The Prospector. Dance Party follows at 9:30 at The Fat Mermaid, 143 N. Harbor Dr.; $10 cover.

The bonfire feast Sunday, Feb 19 night near Old Town is cancelled. No public access to the site will be permitted at any time this weekend.
