04/10

Gunshot Heard: Caller reported hearing 3 gunshots. Officers contacted people walking in the area who thought it was fireworks. Officers were unable to find the source.

Bear Incident: Complainant reported a bear in the Corbin Creek area. Bear left the area prior to officers being dispatched.

Welfare Check: Caller requested a welfare check on an intoxicated resident who was home alone with three children. Officers arrived at the residence but were unable to make contact with anyone.

Suspicious Person: Complainant reported an individual trying to break into a vehicle near the harbor. Officers made contact with the individual and transported them to the hospital to be evaluated.

ATV: A four-wheeler driven by an adult was stopped for not wearing a helmet and having a toddler on board. The driver was spoken to regarding the safety hazards of not wearing a helmet and having a toddler on the ATV. The driver returned home.

Suspicious Person: Complainant reported an individual wearing a red hoodie was trying to break into vehicles at a local hotel. Officers made contact with the individual who denied trying to break into the vehicles but was subsequently issued a trespass from the property.

Panic Alarm: Dispatch received notice that a panic alarm at a local business had been activated. Officers arrived on scene and found it to be a false alarm; an employee was checking to make sure it worked. They were advised to next time call dispatch before testing the alarm.

Animal Bite: Caller reported their grandson had been attacked by a dog in the neighborhood. ACO made contact with the victim and the owner of the dog who turned the dog over for quarantine.

Theft of Property: Complainant reported that some of their campaign signs had been stolen from lawns around town.

Bear Incident: Caller reported an adult and two toddler children were at the Valdez Glacier when they saw a bear in the area. The bear did not charge but they were unable to get back to their vehicle right away. The group was back at their vehicle upon officer arrival. The adult reported possible hypothermia.

Family-Neighbor Fights: Complainant called to speak with an officer regarding child custody issues.

Abandoned Vehicle: Caller reported a vehicle abandoned on Valdez Glacier Lake. Vehicle was removed.

Possible Drunk Driver: Complainant reported seeing an individual drive off with alcohol in hand. Officers made contact with the driver who was negative for impairment.

Open Door: Caller reported finding an open door at a local business, requested officer conduct a walk-thru.

Possible Drunk Driver: Caller reported intoxicated people were getting into their vehicles and leaving the parking lot of a local business. Officers were unable to make contact.

Parking Problems: Complainant reported a trailer was parked on the street making it difficult to see oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Officers contacted the registered owner who agreed to move the trailer.

Welfare Check: Caller requested a welfare check on a child who was with an adult they believed had a no contact order and wasn’t to be around the child. Officers contacted the individuals and found that it was not the child in question.

04/13

DUI: Dispatch received a report of a possible drunk driver. Officers made contact with the vehicle at a local business and determined that the driver was indeed impaired. Matthew Downing, DOB 12/30/1993, of Valdez, was arrested for Driving Under the Influence. His BrAC was .244

ATV: An officer stopped an ATV that was being driven by a juvenile with 2 juvenile passengers. The officer transported the juveniles back to their residence and brought an adult back to the ATV to retrieve it. The officer issued a warning to the parents for permitting the juveniles to drive the ATV and for not having helmets on, and issued a warning to the driver for Driving without a Valid License.

Welfare Check: Caller requested a welfare check on a juvenile who has been sick recently and smelling of fuel. Officers contacted the parent at their residence and found everything to be satisfactory.

Welfare Check: Caller requested a welfare check on their neighbor after hearing what sounded like a CO alarm coming from the residence. Police and Fire responded to the residence, no one was home and the residence was cleared for CO.

04/14

Misconduct Involving Weapons: While on patrol, an officer stopped with an individual walking on the highway that was found to be carrying a concealed weapon. Tristin Harvey, DOB 2/16/1997, of Copper Center, was arrested on the charge of MIW 5th Degree for being a person under 21 years of age concealing a handgun.

Found Property: A black and white men’s mountain bike was found next to a light pole on Hanagita St. Call VPD with descriptors to claim.

Public Speaking/Appearance: The VPD School Resource Officer brought 7 Gilson Middle School students to the police department to speak about Public Safety as a career choice.

Trespassing: A local hotel called to request an individual be trespassed from the property. The individual was located and issued the trespass.

Agency Assist: Alaska State Troopers called to request VPD serve court papers on an individual who had just moved to Valdez from their area.

Welfare Check: Caller requested a welfare check on a family member who they hadn’t heard from in several days. Officers responded to the residence but were unable to make contact. After speaking with a neighbor they were directed to a local business who told officers that the individual went out of town for a few days.

Found Property: An orange mountain bike was found on the side of the highway on the Tide Flats. Call VPD with descriptors to claim.

Possible Drunk Driver: While on patrol, an officer stopped a vehicle for crossing the fog line several times. The driver was found to not be impaired.

04/15

Assist EMS: Officers responded to a residence to assist EMS with a medical call.

Trespassing: Caller requested to speak with an officer regarding needing an individual trespassed from their residence. The officer made contact with the individual and issued the trespass.

Snowmachine: Complainant reported a snowmachine in Mineral Creek across from the Betty Cato Bridge that was buried under snow but was becoming visible as the snow melts. Location of the snowmachine will be passed on to the City Shop since it is in a deep hole and will require heavy equipment to get it out.

Violate Conditions of Release: While on patrol, an officer witnessed an individual purchasing alcohol which was a violation of their conditions of release. James Crawford, DOB 10/03/1979, of Valdez, was issued a citation to appear on the charge of Violating Conditions of Release, original charge: DUI.

Safety Concern: An individual reported being concerned about the gate at a local campground and the possible lack of visibility because it’s painted green and not caution orange or yellow. Officers went out to the campground and observed that the gate has orange flagging and reflective tape.

ATV: Officer stopped with an ATV driving on the street. The driver was on their way home to park it for the night.

Barking Dog: Complainant reported their neighbor’s dog was on the porch barking, wanting back in the house. An officer responded and made contact with the owners who let the dog back in the residence.

Public Assist: An officer stopped to assist a motorist who had flat tires. The vehicle was being towed with a rope back to a residence; the officer explained the towing laws for proper towing.

Found Property: A black backpack was found on a sidewalk, containing personal property including medications. Officers were able to locate the owner and return the backpack.

4-10-17 Valdez Fire responded to oil sheen on the road near 10 Mile subdivision. The sheen was cleaned up and DEC was notified.

4-11-17 Valdez EMS responded to an individual who had slipped and needed medical attention. The patient was treated at the scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.

4-12-17 Valdez EMS responded to an individual who needed medical assistance.

4-13-17 Valdez Fire Department responded to a call for a beeping carbon monoxide alert. The area was investigated.

4-13-17 Valdez EMS responded to a person needing medical assistance. The individual was treated at the scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.

4-14-17 Valdez EMS was on standby during the annual Hill Climb event.

4-15-17 Valdez EMS responded to an individual having seizures. The patient was treated at the scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Clinic.

4-15-17 Valdez EMS responded to a person needing assistance after falling.

4-15-17 Valdez EMS was no standby during the annual Hill Climb event.

4-15-17 Valdez EMS responded to an agency assist request for a helicopter arriving at Providence Valdez Medical Center.

4-17-17 Valdez Fire Department responded to fire alarm activation. Investigation of the area showed no fire, this was a false alarm.
