Stephens resigns from RCAC board

Watchdog group loses valuable team member

After 22 years of service, Stan Stephens resigned from the board of the Prince William Sound Regional Citizen’s Advisory Council. Stephens represented the City of Valdez on the board. The announcement came at the group’s annual meeting in Valdez two weeks ago. Stevens is a past president of the board and has served as past board president and has sat on the board in numerous capacities since its 1990 inception after the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Stephens owns and operates the Valdez-based Stan Stephens Glacier and Wildlife Cruises. He is also a highly respected expert in the oil-spill prevention industry and insiders say his insights will be sorely missed.

Stephens declined to be interviewed regarding his retirement from the RCAC board.

His biography on the RCAC website lists numerous board and committee memberships in the tourist and oil spill prevention industry, including the Valdez Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Prince William Sound Tourism Coalition, the Alaska Visitors Association, the Alaska Travel Industry Association, Prince William Sound Conservation Alliance, the Alaska Forum for Environmental Responsibility, among others.

He has also been showered with numerous accolades over the years. The RCAC website lists a citation by the Alaska State Legislature for his contributions as the President of the PWSRCAC; the Legacy Award from the States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force for Oil Spill Prevention in recognition of his personal commitment to improving the maritime safety in Prince William Sound; the Alaska Conservation Foundation's Celia Hunter award for outstanding volunteer contributions; the Alaska Visitors Association's Life Time Achievement Award; the Alaska Land Managers Forum Outstanding Long-Term Programs Award; and the Coastal Living Magazine Leadership Award recognizing his work in protecting Prince William Sound.

Amanda Bauer will represent the city of Valdez, replacing Stan Stephens.
