Excited seniors and proud parents gathered at Valdez High School Friday night to hand out diplomas to the class of 2013.

When the Valdez High Scholl Class of 2013 picked Adam Sharrai as this year’s commencement speaker, they expected one last quiz before they were done with school for good. The academic decathlon coach spent the last part of his speech quizzing the anxious seniors on quotes by famous people.

There are a lot of questions in the futures of those seniors. But for that night, it was their moment to shine. Last Friday, 44 seniors walked across the stage to receive their diplomas in front of a packed gym filled with friends and family.

Teanna Hutchison was this year’s valedictorian. She plans to attend the University of Alaska-Anchorage this fall and study psychology and theatre. Katrina Bishop was this year’s salutatorian. Her plans are to study journalism at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Fifteen seniors are heading out-of-state for college this fall, with eight others planning to attend Prince William Sound Community College. Seven seniors plan to attend UAA and four are heading to UAF. Only four are going straight into the workforce. Three are joining the military. One senior is heading to a small college within the state.

This year’s class earned $978,146 in scholarships.

The children of George H. Gilson each tossed a scoop of dirt Friday, in front of the old school building bearing his name. From right to left: Rosemary Lull, Ron Gilson, Chris Pakonen, Joanne Winney and Patricia Caples. The building was originally built to replace the old Valdez High School when the town was moved to its present location after the 1964 earthquake. The building is scheduled to shuttered and demolished in the coming weeks, to make way for a new middle school.
