Different newspaper deadlines coming after Christmas

The Valdez Star will publish December 31 instead of January 1 this year

Planning for the holidays at the Valdez Star meant more than just picking a menu for the Christmas party this year. It meant working around Christmas and New Years Day, both of which fall on Wednesdays - the usual day of the week the newspaper is published.

For advertisers and others with important information in the newspaper, that means deadlines will be changed the last week in December.

There will be no newspaper published the week of December 25. There will be a December 31 edition, which is a Tuesday.

Due to printing schedules beyond our control and expediting issues we do not set, the Valdez will be publishing the last 2013 edition on Friday, December 27.

The Valdez Star will need all materials, ad copy, photos, classifieds, everything, before 10 a.m. Friday, December 27.

This applies for all advertisers, including free items in About Town, classifieds, legal notices, display ads, everything.

Regular printing schedules will resume January 8, 2014.

The printing schedule of the November 27 edition, the week of Thanksgiving, is the same as any other week in the newspaper cycle.

The December holidays falling on a Wednesday have made setting a printing schedule difficult.

The Valdez Star is actually printed at the Frontiersman in Wasilla. Their press normally prints tabloid size newspapers on Tuesdays and Saturdays; with the holidays on December 24 and 31, the Frontiersman presses will not roll on those Tuesday dates. That leaves only Saturday available for printing the Valdez Star.

Then the newspapers have to be expedited to Valdez, another long saga, which we will omit this time.

Anyone with questions regarding the newspaper publishing scheduled for the end of the year is encouraged to call the office at 835-2405 or email

With both Christmas and New Year's Day falling on Wednesdays this year, the Valdez Star will be publishing a rare Tuesday edition on December 31 this year.
