Quest for new super will stay local

Board of education reverses course on nationwide search


The board of education may be changing its direction in its quest to find new superintendents.

In late March, the board had reached a consensus that it would hire a temporary one-year superintendent to run the district for the next school year to allow it time to find a permanent superintendent to replace Dr. Lisa Stroh, who resigned her Valdez post, effective July 1.

At its regular board meeting a week ago Monday, the board of education held a discussion that indicates it will probably abandon a tentative plan to hire a firm to conduct a nationwide hunt in favor of hiring the Alaska Association of School Boards (AASB) which it has traditionally used when hiring new superintendents.

Acting board president said in a telephonic interview Monday that while no firm decision has been made by the board on whether or not it will hire a national firm or AASB, the last discussion the board made showed a marked preference to go with AASB.

“This is not written in stone,” Farmer said in Monday’s interview.

The board goal is to have a temporary one-year administrator in place by the time of Stroh’s departure, with a tentative hiring process for a new permanent administrator set for late October or early November of this calendar year.

“I would say it would be a tentative timeline,” Farmer said. “There will be some follow-up discussions.”

However, it was unclear when the board would take up the matter for discussion.

The agenda for the next regular school board meeting April 28 was not yet published Tuesday morning.

In early April, Farmer said in a guest editorial in the Valdez Star that the board intended to take a slow, prudent approach in filling the vacant post in the top administration seat in the district.

While the top position in the district is open, so are several other positions in the district, including principals at the elementary and high schools, in addition to teaching and non-certified positions throughout the district.

The committee tasked to guide the hiring process for new principals has been formed and will begin the hiring process in the coming weeks.
