Group exposes voting histories of Alaska residents

Motive behind message unclear in letters, emails sent by Opportunity Alliance PAC

ANCHORAGE-Scores of Alaska voters have received letters and emails that detail whether the recipients and people they know voted in recent elections.

The messages from an elusive group calling itself the Alaska State Voter Program say the lists will be updated following next week's election.

Such pressure tactics are not unheard of. Similar efforts have been employed in other states, including mailers in Louisiana from Americans For Prosperity, the conservative group funded by the billionaire Koch brothers.

The Alaska messages are sponsored by the Opportunity Alliance PAC, and the motive behind these mailings was unclear.

State elections director Gail Fenumiai (feh-NEW'-me-eye) says many Alaskans have complained. Fenumiai says there's nothing illegal about the messages because state law doesn't put any limitations on what can be done with the voter lists.
