The Valdez Star - Serving Prince William Sound and Copper River Basin

John Ira Rogers, Sr. was born in Minette, Washington on July 24, 1920 to Belle (Tinkham) and Jesse J. Rogers. He graduated from West Seattle High School and served in the US Navy during WWII. He continued to live in Seattle until 1951 when he moved to Valdez, Alaska where he raised his family, worked as a commercial fisherman, a master carpenter and bridge builder for 45 years.

In 1990 he moved to Ocean Park, Washington where he lived out the remainder of his life working to perfect his carving skills and furniture making abilities. His work can be seen around Washington state and in the homes of his loved ones. He was fortunate to meet and marry his final love who shared his passions for dancing and story telling and then quickly caught his gold fever. They traveled all over Alaska and the southern U.S. having a ball and looking for their "fortune" in a gold pan. He never found his fortune in gold but he was rich in family and friends.

He was a wonderful father and grandfather. Some of our favorite memories are times spent with him tramping around Prince William Sound. He treated all his children equally, with generous amounts of love, firmness and respect. He taught them to be hard working, kind, loving, and to hold no prejudice against any person.

John was a friend to many. His sense of humor and ability to join any person in one drink or ten and remain friendly, funny and kind, dance the night away and tell a story like no other, remains legend.

He will continue to be missed loved and respected by 6 children, 26 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, his brother and many dear friends.

He joins in peace, happiness and health with his parents, two brothers, a sister, 4 wives, 4 children, two grandchildren and many friends. We love to think of him sitting around with them, telling a great story and enjoying their company, just as he did in life.
