Mass flu shot event is this Thursday at HHES

Everyone in Valdez is encouraged to come get their free inoculation

People in Valdez are encouraged to come get a free flu shot at Hermon Hutchens Elementary School Thursday night.

The vaccine is free and everyone is eligible according to the city's public information office.

Flu season is beginning and the Alaska Dept. of Health has already reported 30 confirmed cases statewide.

Getting inoculated early is the key to prevention experts say, and in Valdez the process is easy and you can't get less expensive than free.

All you have to do is show up at the W. Klutina Street entrance to the school this Thursday between 6-9 p.m. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

For the past several years the city, along with the Alaska Dept. of Health and other organizations, has sponsored mass vaccination events. There have been several events that doubled as drills so that emergency responders can practice vaccinating a large number of people in as short a period of time as possible, so that they can be prepared to respond in the event of an actual public health crisis.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that this year's flu shot will protect against the top four flu viruses that are most likely to infect people this flu season.

So what will this year's flu season be like? The CDC says it is hard to say.

"It's not possible to predict what this flu season will be like," the CDC says on its website. "Flu seasons are unpredictable in a number of ways. While flu spreads every year, the timing, severity, and length of the season varies from one year to another."

The CDC recommends all people over the age of six months be inoculated to prevent the spread of the flu.

Frequent hand washing and avoiding people who are sick are also recommended.

It also recommends that people who have the flu avoid going out in public.

"If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others," the CDC says.
