Meth bust

Valdez police arrested a 49-year old woman for receiving drugs in the US mail.

Police said Rhonda M. McConkie was charged with "Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree."

A city press release said police officers seized a package containing approximately 10 grams of methamphetamine from McConkie at the time of her arrest, Monday, Feb. 8.

"McConkie's arrest was a result of a joint investigation by the Valdez Police Department and US Postal Inspection Service, with cooperation from the Valdez Branch of the US Postal Service," police said.

The Buccaneer mascot returned to Valdez High School last week during the Elks Tournament - brand new duds for the town's favorite swashbuckler.

Bail was set at $5,000 with a third party requirement.

Council meetings

The Valdez City Council will hold back-to-back regular meetings after the city clerk said the regularly scheduled Feb. 16 meeting was canceled.

The meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 29. In an unusual move, council will meet the next day, Tuesday, March 1, for its first regular meeting of March.

The city's charter requires council to hold at least two regular meetings per month, but does not dictate how meetings are spaced. Work sessions, community meeting and other types of council meetings do not count as regular meetings.
