Knight is lone candidate to run for mayor this May

Candidate list is finalized after filing period closed Tuesday evening

Valdez woman Ruth Knight is the lone candidate for Valdez mayor when the ballots are printed for May's municipal elections.

The deadline to run for city office closed Tuesday night.

Council member Jim Shirrell had an outstanding petition for both mayor and city council seats. He returned the petition to run for city council according to city clerk Sheri Pierce.

A candidate can appear on the ballot for mayor or city council, but not both.

Incumbents Nate Smith and Chris Moulton will also be on the ballot.

Doug Davies is running for city council, as are newcomers David Jonas, Darren Reese.

Dennis Fleming, a former council member, will also be on the ballot.

Council terms are for two years.

School board terms are for three years under regular elections. This year, the board of education has a one-year term open to fill a slot that is open due to a board resignation.

Newcomers Melissa Cockerham and Sonya Ash-Selanoff and Melissa Cockerham appear on the ballot, along with incumbents Joe Prax and Erika Shirk

Incumbent Alan Sorum has filed a petition to run for the one-year term on the board of education.

The municipal elections will be held May 3.
