Gorman is back

Former KCHU public news director Tony Gorman is back on the airwaves in Valdez, PWS and the Copper Valley.

Gorman is replacing Marcia Lynn, who announced her retirement in March. Lynn replaced Gorman as news director back in Sept. of 2014.

Gorman returns to Valdez after a stints in graduate school in Ohio and a tenure as the general manager of KDLL public radio in Kenai.

Fly-in ready

Organizers are working behind the scenes in the final weeks before the fly-in.

The Valdez Fly-In and Air Show - this will be the thirteenth event - is slated on May 6, 7, and 8 at the Valdez airport, officially known as the Pioneer Field Airport.

"The event attracts pilots from all over Alaska and the lower 48," the event's website says. "The three day event highlights are a Poker Run and STOL competition in various classes of planes. It also includes a Flour Bombing competition, Aerobatics, Sky Divers, Static displays and a kids Balsa Plane event."

Organizers say that 2,000 people attended last year's event, which is family friendly.

Point Thompson

(AP) Exxon Mobil Corp. says it has commenced production from the Point Thomson petroleum field on Alaska's North Slope.

In a release, the company says that at full production, the facility is designed to produce up to 10,000 barrels per day of natural gas condensate and 200 million cubic feet of recycled gas that can be re-injected for future recovery.

The state in 2012 reached a settlement with companies including Exxon, BP and ConocoPhillips in a long-running dispute over Point Thomson leases. The state has said Point Thomson contains about one-quarter of the North Slope's gas reserves and is critical to any major gas commercialization project.

The state has been pursuing a major liquefied natural gas project with Exxon, BP and ConocoPhillips.
