Three vacancies currently exist on the Economic Diversification Commission due to term expiration. Appointees will serve a three-year term of office, expiring in September of 2019. The City of Valdez is accepting applications from citizens who would like to be considered for appointment.

Members of the commission shall be diversified to the maximum extent possible and appointed to represent specific industry sectors of the economy. No two members may be appointed to serve concurrently from the same industry sector. Appointees representing the following industry sectors will be considered to fill the current vacancies: accommodations, commercial fisheries, professional services (attorney, engineer, banker, real estate, media, etc.), food/beverage, healthcare, seafood processing, sport fisheries, retail, oil/gas, transportation, and winter tours/attractions.

The commission is an advisory commission to the city council. It shall have the authority to prepare and submit for approval a comprehensive economic diversification strategy for the overall economic diversification of the community; prepare and recommend for approval reports and plans regarding socioeconomic data and specific sectors of the economy; review and make recommendations to the council for approval of strategic plans, plans of work and funding requests of agencies, organizations, and event sponsors; review and make recommendations for approval on projects submitted for economic development grant funding opportunities; receive, consider and evaluate public input, opinions and recommendations regarding economic diversification programs of the city and advise the city council of any findings or recommendations; and other duties related to economic diversification as outlined in Chapter 2.60 of Valdez municipal code.

The City’s Solid Waste Department needs your help to keep hazardous waste out of your landfill!

Household Hazardous Waste

Collection Day

Saturday, August 20, 2016

9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Baler Facility

500 S. Sawmill Road

During Collection Day, the baler facility will accept any and all household hazardous waste, including paint, pesticides, miscellaneous household chemicals, and other products.

As defined by City Code, Chapter 8.08.020, hazardous waste cannot be disposed of in trash cans or dumpsters.

“Hazardous waste” means waste capable of causing injury, disease or impairment of health or property damage, including but not limited to, poisons, pesticides, acids, caustics, infectious or pathological waste, radioactive materials, explosive or highly flammable materials, oil and petroleum products, batteries, burning or smoldering materials, or any items which, when disposed of into the landfill, will cause contamination of groundwater or cause the groundwater to not meet state drinking water standards.
