Valdez kicked into high gear Monday and welcomed guests from the MS Europa - a luxury cruise ship with a German flair.

Helicopters took to the air, kayakers put oar to water and vendors took to the street Monday as Valdez welcomed a rare visitor to its shores - a cruise ship.

The MS EUROPA - billed as the "most beautiful yacht in the world" - laid anchor at the Kelsey Dock Monday morning and its passengers set out to see the sights.

With a maximum passenger capacity of 400 people, the MS EUROPA conducts ship's business in German.

"...the EUROPA is a German-speaking ship," the parent company, Hapag Lloyd Cruises, says on its website, "and that the cruises are in German."

Tour operators in Valdez were given a chance to set up shop on the dock, while vendors who hoped to offer other goods or services held a small street-style fair on Fairbanks Dr, between city hall and the library.

The MS EUROPA 20-day Alaska tour began and is slated to in Vancouver, BC. The luxury cruise ship hit traditional cruise ship ports such as Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before making its Valdez call. The ship was slated to next port in Homer.
