Alpinist Ben Erdmann enjoyed a number of climbs in Valdez last year as part of the Rock Climbing Festival last year. This year's event adds yoga, laughter and flow arts to the all inclusive event.

Rock on Valdez - that is the word from a local event planning group that works to get people outdoors.

The annual Rock Climbing Fest - organized by Levitation 49 - has changed its name this year to the new Valdez Rock & Flow Fest, and its coming to Valdez this week.

The name change reflects the addition of yoga, laughter and "flow arts" to the lineup of activities, which begin this Friday.

In addition to various rock climbing events, this year's fest includes a number of new activities - including a laugh yoga - an event hosted by a face familiar to Valdez.

Mike Bork, the former head of parks and recreation in Valdez is coming back to town with a new name: Mr. Mirth and a certification in - don't snicker now - laughter yoga.

Bork, who now hangs his hat in Fairbanks, will be hosting a community laugh on Friday at noon on the Kelsey Dock.

"Come as you are," the group said in a press release earlier this month. "No special clothes required though sensible shoes would be a bonus."

Views of the airport were spectacular from the rocks above during the Rock Climbing Festival, hosted by Levitation 49.

Other yoga activities are also on the itinerary throughout the weekend, in addition to rock climbing events.

"Notable guests of the event include a Guinness World Record Holding climber, a former Cirque du Soleil performer, and California multi-instrumentalist Trevor Green who headlines a free concert, complete with beer garden, at Kelsey Plaza on Saturday night," the group said in a press release earlier this month.

Certified guide Chris Walden of Soldotna will hold an all-age/skill level rock climbing clinic at the rock wall at Gilson Middle School Friday night.

"Walden's daughter Avery is the youngest person to ever summit Mt, Kilimanjaro when she summited the peak at age 9 this past Christmas," Levitation 49 said.

A full list of clinics and events can be found at the Levitation 49 website.
