The Valdez Star - Serving Prince William Sound and Copper River Basin

Carol Alley

September 20, 2017

Carol Patricia Alley, age 84, passed away on July 1, 2017 - six weeks short of her 66th Anniversary. She was born in Bishop, Calif. on August 31, 1932. She married Roy Alley on August 24, 1951.

Carol homesteaded 160 acres in Kenny Lake in May 1960 with her husband Roy and son Richard. The homestead cabin burned down in 1970 at 50 below zero. The family then moved to Valdez. Roy and Carol purchased a fishing vessel, the "Libra" in 1969, and fished with family off and on for 20+ years. In 1973 Richard, their only son, drowned in Copper River, two weeks short of his 21st birthday.

She was active in Valdez Eagles Fraternity Auxiliary in many positions including Aerie Auxiliary Madam. During the Alaska Pipeline construction, Carol worked for Bank of the North, first as a teller and later, Operations Manager. In 1981 Roy and Carol purchased "FV Ricky" a new 48 foot seiner, and she fished most salmon seasons with family, as a deck boss and cook. Biscuits and gravy was one of her many specialties. They sold the fishing business the year of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill and moved to Chitina, where they lived in a two story log cabin on land they purchased in mid-1960, then spent 20 years "snowbirding" between there and Arizona. They had a home built in Mesquite Creek, Mohave Valley, Ariz., where they spent their winters.

Carol was a talented artist with many scenes of Alaska; my favorite-Liberty Falls. She also published three cookbooks under the title "Cooking at the Cabin." Carol enjoyed playing tournament style Texas Hold'em for eight years at Mesquite Creek clubhouse. Friends and relatives anticipated her yearly Christmas letter which over the years became a book of several pages. The last trip Roy and Carol took was an RV trip to the Hualapai Mountains near Kingman, Ariz. Two miles from the RV park, she slipped away on July 1, 2017, a few weeks short of her 85th birthday, August 31, and her 66th wedding anniversary, August 24.

She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Carol is survived by her husband, Roy; brother, John Lewis; brothers-in-law, Steve H. Alley and Harry D. Alley; nieces, nephews and other relatives scattered throughout the country.
